Penn Medicine study links Birthly platform to better outcomes
Healthcare providers know that the risks in childbirth can vary from simple to complex, predictable to unpredictable.
Though some degree of risk will always be at play, equipping patients with the education to physically, mentally, and emotionally prepare for childbirth puts them in a better position for a successful childbirth experience.
In partnership with Penn Medicine, our platform was used to conduct a controlled trial comparing an interactive online childbirth education platform (Birthly) to standard prenatal education alone.
Patients from two clinics were randomly enrolled in either the interactive platform, which included three interactive courses and access to a clinician-moderated online community, or standard education.
In this study, patients who participated in a curriculum like Birthly’s experienced more positive results across multiple key outcomes including:
- Significantly lower anxiety in third trimester
- Lower emergency healthcare utilization
- Higher breastfeeding rates at delivery
- Higher satisfaction with childbirth education
In conclusion, this research emphasizes the importance of providing patients with education and resources to help prepare them for childbirth. Birthly patients experienced more positive outcomes during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period.
